Yeah, I think your instinct is right. You might have given him too much freedom too soon. Limit his ability to roam around the house until he really gets it down. Be sure to praise, praise, praise whenever he does it right.

Don't take it as a defeat. Sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take the next one forward. Good luck!
