If that works, I agree with Holly_QD, use bows with a barrette, put the band in and slip the barrette between her head and the band.
Be sure to take them out at night.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that. I always massage Holly's little head when I take it off, she loves it. Then she goes right to sleep. LOL I can remember when grandma made me a ponytail. Talk about an old -fashioned-home-made face lift.
