If it is a wax finish, then get some #000 steel wool. Then rub the spot real gently with the steel wool dipped in a little floor wax. If that doesn't work, you may have to sand it off and refinish -- a real pain if the floor was done very long ago because stains age and it is difficult to just restain a small spot.

I used the steel wool idea on a coffee table white mark -- Instead of floor wax, I used a little Old English furniture polish -- worked like a charm.
