It sounds like what you're doing is OK. He is a little young, but you've taken it slow and eased him up to that distance. I agree with the others that you should watch him and make sure he's not struggling. Also, pay attention to him the next day and make sure he's not sore.

You probably should ask your vet, too. I'm just guessing. My guys only go a couple miles a day.
