Just because your baby has liver problems, does not make it a death sentence, trust me, I know first hand. If your baby is not having symptoms, you can wait a couple of months as long as you put him on a low, non-animal protein diet (usually prescribed by a vet) and lactulose to save up for the surgery, if it's an extrahepatic shunt.
If your baby has an extrahepatic liver shunt, then it is more than likely operable and NEEDS to be surgically repaired quickly.

If your baby has mvd, then it can be managed through diet and medications..If your baby is having liver problems, then he probably needs lactulose...This is key in pushing the toxins out of your baby's body. Also, your baby needs to be put on a lower protein, non-animal protein diet, such as Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14...If your baby has liver shunt/mvd, animal protein is extremely hard on their livers...

Denosyl and milk thistle or marin(milk thistle with vitamin e and zinc) are also key in helping liver function...The recommended amount of milk thistle is 1/4 the human dose...And depending on your baby's weight, 100 or 225mg of denosyl or Sam-E(same thing).

My baby has an inoperable liver shunt/mvd and his body also produces ammonium urate crystals...Because his condition is not repairable through surgery, we manage it through diet and medication, but unfortunately, his body still produces the stones...So, our vet did PU surgery, which basically means that they made a new hole for him to pee out of...About an inch long so that he can pass the stones easily. See, their urethras are soooo tiny, that it is impossible for them to pass the stones through their penis...So, they did this surgery, and he's doing well...
If you have any questions, please ask.
