Well, Miko's bladder produces ammonium urate stones because of his liver issues...As long as his liver is not functioning up to par, his body will continue producing these...Since they were not able to find the shunt, they decided to do this surgery which basically makes him pee out of a different hole. He no longer pees out of his penis because the urethra is way too small to allow him to pass the stones...So they made a larger hole about an inch long kind of like where a female would pee out of, and he pees out of there and is able to pass most of the stones without any problems.
They wouldn't need to do that for your baby though since he doesn't have bladder stones, and he's getting his liver shunt fixed.
I'm sure they will use the gas anesthesia since they are experienced with fixing liver shunts in small dogs.
