Our baby chi had kennel cough. The vet gave amoxicillin, and it cleared up within 10 days even though we kept him on the antibiotic for 14 days.
I don't know if you know this already, but kennel cough itself is not treatable. It is like getting a cold. It has to run its course. The reason they give you an antibiotic is to prevent kennel cough from turning into pnemonia. Sometimes it can take longer for a pup to recover. And it gets worse before it gets better. The vet should be able to tell where the cough originates with a check up. Only a vet can tell you what is going on with your pup's cough by listening his lungs.
If you do not trust your vet, I agree that you should find a vet you can trust. It is so important! I worry a bit more than what's necessary at times, and it makes a huge difference.

Good luck with your little one. I hope Loki will get better soon.
