Question Do vets always shave the hair for a spay?

Xena was spayed today - and it's been traumatic for me (she's fine, but it's still traumatic). We just brought her home 1/2 hour ago so she's still sedated, but I saw that they shaved a good amount of hair on her belly and up her sides. Is that normal? I thought they would shave where the incision was but now her hair it two completely different lengths and it's very noticeable. She has never had her hair trimmed so it had some good length to it. Has this been the case with anyone else? I'm thinking I'll have to cut the rest of her hair to match or will it start to blend? I know it will grow out, but after reading a lot of posts it sounds like it could take months.
