I used to dread opening the front door because they'd bolt. I trained them the following way: I say a sharp "shh" sound and quickly tap my dogs on their back leg. This distracted them from focusing on bolting. I kept setting up the scenario until they caught on, usually about 4 tries. Now they wait for permission.
