AKC rules state older. However, you usually retire them about 6 years of age.....sometimes sooner....7 is way to risky on the mother, you will most likely cause her problems. Vet's can determine the health, but are not experienced in breeding and whelping......

My practice is 1st know my females age, 2nd after I determine that she is still young enough, I have her and the sire vet checked for STDs before I breed. After all is checked out and before they are bred, I start in my investigation of potential pet owners, (those that have approached me for a puppy) for those puppy's I do not plan to keep.....then and only then do I breed them.
