I usually rinse mother's hind quarters with warm water right after whelping, making sure she is blow dried before putting her in with puppies. I don't bathe her for 2 weeks with a mild puppy shampoo taking care that she is rinsed throughly. At that time she is more apt to be willing to leave her puppies for longer periods of time. You don't want to stress her out, as this can have an adverse affect on her milk production. Inbetween I wipe her breasts with baby wipes. When taking her out to potty, I wipe her private areas, breasts and feet between putting her back with babies.
