No you are right to tell them no do not pick her up what if they drop her? If you feel comfortable with them touching her tell them to get to her level or you pick her up and let them pet her. I Never let strangers pick mine up. I let them no with a pollite no and ask if they want to sit on the ground then they can see them. If they don't want to do that then tuff. It is not rude it is looking out for your pup.
I don't own parties (I WISH) but mine get the oooos and ahhhhhs too.
