I can't imagine why leaving the hair long would give the dog bad eyesight. I'm not a groomer, but I would think it would be the opposite... If you use clippers around their eyes, it grows out very quickly and pokes in their eyes, but with the hair long its really easy to put in a topknot and pull it up out of their face. When they use clippers you have to take them in all the time to get their eyes cleaned up... with leaving it long I hardly ever have to take Tino to the groomer. I started clipping his toenails so other than that since his body hair is long, I really only have to get them to keep him shaped up.
As far as the price... since I bathe him at home... and they only have to do a trim, it usually only costs me abt $30....when I had him in a puppy cut it was over $50! I actually think its less expensive to have them in a full coat!
Gerry- I tell them no clippers on his face bc I like the nice clean line that it makes when they just take the scissors and make one long cut up the sides. This way all of the hair is the same length and it just grows out really nice too!
I agree about not leaving them... I have left Tino before with one groomer that I really trust, but even so, I would never leave them for a bathe and a blow dry... so many horror stories are about burns from the blow dryer.
