When I was getting ready to bring Pixie home I rubbed a shirt on Pixie while she was still at the breeder's house and then brought it home to Tuffy and let him sleep with it in his bed. He got used to her "scent" so when I finally brought her home he felt like he already knew her. I kept Tuffy seperated from her at first in a pen and let her kind of explore without him trying to attack her. She made herself right at home so I when I let Tuffy out they both started playing like they had known each other forever. It took some time to get them to get along and even now, 2 months later, they still have fights but they never hurt each other and always seem to make up afterwards. It just takes lots of time and patience. The hardest part of having an adult dog and a puppy is keeping them seperated during meal time so they don't eat each other's food. Also, you might want to expect some behavior issues with your older dog.. Tuffy started marking and had a few potty accidents because he was acting out at me for bringing home another dog. Another tip I've learned is to make sure you pay as much attention to your older dog as you do to the new puppy. Always give the older dog their dinner first, their treats first, praise first and love first so they won't be as likely to feel upset and act out. At first it seemed overwhelming having two dogs, but now I wouldn't have it any other way.
