Almost everyone pleads "not guilty" initially, even if they've already confessed and are planning to eventually plead guilty.
Sometimes they do it to allow time to work on a plea bargain or to give their attorney time to try to find a loophole or a mistake made by police so they can "get off on a technicality".
That being said, I hope they fry!
