I pluck both Missy & Max's. The ear hair usually sticks together so its easy to pull it with tweezers and quiet a few come out with one pluck. I only pluck 2 or 3 times and the majority of it's gone. They dont seem bothered by it at all, I think they even enjoy it, as crazy as that seems. When I am doing Missys she sits there really nice and still and Max is at my feet crying to get his turn, then I do his and he sits nice and quietly. I'd say give it a try and if it looks like it caused them discomfort and your not comfortable then leave it to the groomers but if you pluck and they show no reaction you could make it part of your home grooming
