I find no difference in the temperments of the maltese vs the Yorkie and must say also how the breeder raises the pups too!
Holding, cuddling, rubbing their bellies, playing with them all at an early age all this interaction is what helps to develope their personality, many breeders raise their babies in a pen and leaving them in a pen without very little interaction.

It's nurture and nature. Personalities vary within litters (my two sons are complete opposites

It is my understanding that Maltese were originally bred as "companion dogs" for the wealthy, while Yorkshire Terriers were rat hunters.
There will be differences but there would be even if you had 2 Yorkies and 2 Maltese.
Just love your babies and appreciate their differences.
