He laid back his ears, GROWLED at me, and absolutely refused to have anything to do with me the rest of the night. He was fine with my husband, who was gone an entire 12 days.
To me that says, they don't just "live in the moment"...he knew I had left him for a couple days, which I NEVER do, and he was holding a grudge that I had done that. It was 2 full days before he was completely back to his old self. Although, he only growled at me the first night. Just wanted to share, and OP, I sorry you had a poopy butt..I think he was mad at you, or why would he poop in "your" seat?

Again, I totally stand by my opinion as far as dogs living in the moment. Talk to any reputable trainer or dog behaviorist and they will tell you that a dog will not remember what it did 5min ago. Thats why they say if you come home to a house that has been torn apart don't start yelling at the dog as he will have no understanding of what he/she did wrong. You will continue to believe that your dog held a grudge because you left him and its a comforting thought, I just don't buy into it thats all. Again, just my opinion which isn't based on anything other then 17+years training dogs and horses. I've been raised with Yorkies as well as Great Danes, trained and worked with many breeds. I never ever question the intelligence of dogs (or animals in general) and I have great respect for them. I just find that I am able to work with my clients dogs if I go with the feelings that they are a dog and not human in the sense that we reason. Please do not mistake my words, my dogs are like my human family and in my heart, I just go about the training methods with a different thought pattern. JMO
