We didn't have a problem with Tatum's topknot until we got Stormie, our Australian Shepherd. They play so hard outside that her hair was breaking off at the base of the topknot. That didn't start until we got Stormie so I'm assuming that's what happened. I stopped putting a topknot in except for special occassions where we go somewhere with her and it's slowly growing long enough again to put it up.
I agree... make sure you're not getting it too tight close to the scalp and use the bands that don't pull so much. Good luck!
