I live in an apartment community on the third floor. When I got Sparky (in December) it was cold outside, and I began trying to train him to go outside. Well then he picked up worms, so the vet recommended I keep him inside until he was bigger and finished all his shots. He is now 5 months old (will be on the 12th of this month), and had begun begging and whining whenever I took my 7 year old coon hound out, so I bought a halter and began taking him out with us. He took great to walking on a leash.....I was really surprised, and thought he would freak out the first time. But he walks along like a pro. Trouble is, he has not pottied outside at all. We take walks all around the complex (sometimes out for 30-45 minutes). He holds it until we get back inside and gets a treat (I've always rewarded my dogs for going potty-even after 7 years). Then he will (sometimes) walk right over to his paper and pee. Today after the 40 minute walk, I brought both dogs in, let them drink some water, gave them both a treat and then took a piece of paper Sparky had used earlier this morning and Sparky outside with me. I put the paper on the concrete breezeway (we live at the end of the building and most everyone is gone during the day working) and we sat out there for another 30 minutes. Still nothing!
[QUOTE.xxmxaxrxyxx: it is alot easier in my opinion to train them to go inside first...because going outside only comes natural][/QUOTE]
I wish Sparky would pick up on the "natural" part and go outside too.
Am I doing something wrong? Any pointers from the "INSIDE TO OUTSIDE" crew? |
