When Miko was trying to pass stones before he had his surgery, he would pee off of his pad too. We were afraid that he didn't want to pee on the pads anymore, but it will get better. After Miko started feeling better, he went back to peeing on the pads. To this day though, we know when he's feeling sick or having trouble passing a stone because he will purposely pee off of his pad to let us know he's not feeling well. It's amazing!
BTW Miko's body produces stones because of his liver condition...
