My pets always have a Microchip AND a collar w/ a small id tag. The harness also has an id tag.

The problem w/ microchips is that not everyone knows about them. If someone is ignorant of them, finds your dog and doesn't see the "usual" tag - they may be more inclined to keep the dog.

If they see the more "common" tag, at least they may be motivated to return the pup, esp. when they see an owner's name etc. - it may garner some sympathy and some add'l understanding that this baby actually belongs to someone else.

If you want your pup to wear a (safe) collar - just keep putting it on him, praise him, hold him, reassure. He will get used to it. DON'T take it off when he's whining/upset or this teaches him to do this IN ORDER to make you take it off. Take it off when he's calmed himself.

Use it safely (perhaps just when going out?), fit it properly and it can be a great tool in terms of ID.
