Everyone here has given great advice. It is only natural to shed, hair dies and brushing helps eliminate the dead hair and stimulate blood flow to encourage new growth. If you are holding them tightly this may be causing more stress which may be the reason they are shedding more.

Just a suggestion: Try walking the dogs for about 30-45 minutes prior to grooming. Really tire them out. Then calmly put them on your lap, start petting them with your hand. Add the brush after they have calmed and sometimes will even fall asleep. This creates a much calmer environment and they see this as a reward not a punishment.

I'd just add that if you think they are really shedding too much I would visit the vet.
