Stones are created when the urine is oversaturated with crystals.

In Ralphie's case, it was too much protein which created high calcium levels. Yorkies are one breed prone to either oxalate stones or struvite stones. In my dog's case his urine was too acidic. I now use PH test strips to make sure his urine level stays around 6.5 to 7.5 which is the neutral zone, and does not become too alkaline which could cause struvite stones. He is now on Hill's Prescription U/D diet to keep the protein levels low.

AFter the surgery, I was given a few stones in a jar to see what he was suffering from. They were like sharp jagged-edged little lava stones....must have been very painful but he never showed any signs of discomfort.
