Question Shift worker trying to potty train!

I just got my teacup Yorkie (Spike) two weeks ago - he's already five months old and I am trying to potty train him. He's making progress - I keep him in the bathroom when I'm not home or at work, and take him outside as soon as I get home at at various points throughout the day. My goal is to train him to go outside, but also to use pee pads when I'm not home. I would like him to eventually be able to have the run of the house when I'm not there, rather than being confined to the bathroom! My two main problems are 1) He's already five months old and as far as I can tell he hasn't been housebroken yet and 2) I work shifts, so maintaining a consistent timetable is impossible. I know patience is the key - but can anyone give me any suggestions as to how I can achieve my goal!?!?!
