You're right and you're husband is wrong where their learning is concerned.
He sure can learn and remember things at his age if it is done on a consistant basis. I used to work with Teddy just 15 minutes each day when he was that
age and I could not believe how fast and eager he was to learn new things.
It's all about positive reinforcement and building the bond between the two
of you. As far as him connecting the word to the action just keep with it
and he will get the association with time. I personally when I am teaching
use both hand and word commands so they react equally to both after awhile.
It's amazing the companion you'll end up with by investing a little time and
love. Teddy comes, shakes, high five's, plays dead, rolls over, does circles,
fetches and many more things and he learned everything he does before he
was 6 months old. Good luck to you and have fun!
