and having a breeder say that they do "better in pairs" sounds like a selling tactic to me. i am a sahm so romeo has me here. i think if it is done properly the pupppy will be fine. i really wonder about my neighbors yorkie - it IS at home along all day and it is a wild dog!! you can tell it has been locked up all day and can't wait to get out!
My Archie is an "only child" and from 3 months until a year old he was home alone all day until I started to work at home. He did fine by himself and has always been a happy little guy. I recently had thought of getting him a little sissy, but have decided to hold off. It's totally OK to have an only!
