In my case. I got Rocky at 10 weeks. At this point the breeder said he is crate trained.
I could not put him in a metal crate for 12 hours every day.
I gave him my bedroom (15-20ft room) with a pee pad, food and a small bed, and he is good so far.
He sleeps in his bed at night, and does his things on the pad.
So far so good.
