I take a strip of the fabric and fold the raw edges in, then fold it in half, to make it the same size as the flat side of the D ring. I sew one end of this to the back of the garment. then I put the D ring on it and fold in the ends and sew it again as close to the D ring as I can get

i go over it several times to make sure it will hold.
