I think it depends on what you are personally afraid of. Most of the time I just keep telling myself: "Don't be afraid - the camera crew is right there, it's all fake". I rely on how many of my fingernails are left by the end of a movie.
How about Deliverence? That one scared the bejeepers out of me the first time I saw it and even now it gives me the willies.
