Training is sooo hard...I know it can be frustrating.
Try this.....he may be getting nervous every time he sees the gate closing...
So instead of putting him on the puppy pad, running out and shutting the gate....
Walk him over to the puppy pad and wait next to the pad until he goes. That way he knows you're nearby and the gate doesn't shut on him.
All yorkies hate to be alone in a gated area, especially when their owners are just in the other room.
I think when he has free range of the house and he needs to go potty, he won't go on the wee wee pad because he's now associated the pad with the gate closing.
It's going to take some time to break his thinking but try walking him over to the pad and waiting. If it still doesn't work, try a different location for the pad. He may still be associating gate closing with wee wee pad in that area.
Hope this helps!
