We're from Florida also and when my husband and I were looking for a pup almost 3yrs ago, we needed to stay in a certain price range also.
Well, we ended up falling in love with a puppy from a supposed breeder (we later found out she was a broker for puppymills). She claimed to have the parents on site and that her pups were healthy and that they would be around 5lbs. He came to us very sick and had about every problem you can imagine...Heart murmur, upper respiratory infection, coccidia, hypoglycemia, etc. All those things went away with treatment and time thank goodness, but some months later, we found out Miko has liver problems that he has to be on a prescription diet and take medications for it everyday and he weighs over 10lbs.
We would NEVER trade him for anything in the world. He is our baby boy and like a child to us, and we couldn't be happier with him. I'm telling you this, so that you know that it can end up being more expensive by buying from a less reputable breeder who has "the right prices". We have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on his vet bills in less than 3yrs.
You may want to look at a rescue organization.

They are wonderful!! Contact them and see if they have anything you may be looking for...Good luck!
I think it's great you're asking questions before you get the pup.
