I had this problem when Toby was still with us. I solved it by buying a larger Rubbermaid tote box at Walmart. The kind that comes with a lid. At one end of the box lid I cut a large hole for my cat to get in and out of it. The edges because of the material aren't sharp but I still took duct tape and put it around the opening. She jumps on the one end that is solid and climbs in to use it and then climbs back out. Toby could never get anywhere near it because the tote is so high on the sides (plus the lid) there was no way Toby could get to it but there was plenty of room for Bailey (my cat) to use it.
