Sounds to me like your little nephew dog is excited to be around a playmate, which explains all his running around. I've seen dogs do it several times. My father's golden retriever is spastic when he comes to visit. Any way, I don't think you are being cruel by confining the puppy to the kitchen--especially since you are giving him toys to occupy him. Hang in there!
