My cousin is a vet and a dedicated animal lover. I asked him about this a few years back when I heard of someone doing this. He says he gets calls for everyday. He will not do it and usually will beg (and has even offered money) the person to sign the dog over to the clinic. All of his staff are animal lovers as well, and when they can get the person to sign the dog over, one of them will foster (or sometimes keep) the animal until they find a good forever home.
I asked why people do this, and believe it or not, so many people think it is better for the animal. They believe that turning it over to the pound is cruel. Or if they want to put the animal to sleep over a "behavior problem" such as difficult to housetrain or barking, or such....that the next owner will give the animal away as well. He told me dozens and dozens of people put the animal down b/c they bought it and it and it didn't meet breed standard. it is a horrible practice and should not be allowed. Makes me want to cry just thinking of it. |
