I have always had lots of pets, even when my first child was small. It is always our rule that no kids are allowed to "pick up" any pets. They can sit on the floor and the pet can get in their lap, pet the dog/kitten, love it all they won't. Just no picking up, thus no dropping.
I also have to say though, that the max excitement time for any new pet here (with the kids) is about two weeks. After that, they could really care less. They have already moved on to bigger and better things. That is why I only acquire animals/pets that I am willing to take on 100% responsibility for.
