I feed both of mine the same food and free-feed as well. My problem is keeping them from getting into the cat's food.
Hubby literally screwed the cat's bowl up high in his condo so the dogs can't get to it and theirs is on their 'buffet' wooden holder on the ground.
To Alaskayorkies, I don't know the answer either but you could try to feed them in different rooms so they aren't tempted to eat each other's food.
