When Linus won't calm down, I put him in the bathtub filled a little more than how high he can stand and make him swim around a little bit (with constant supervision of course). Then I put just a little bit of lavender baby soap in with his puppy shampoo and he calms down almost immediately. Lavender is soothing to babies, and I have heard to dogs too. I think he just wears himself out. But he may just do that because he's a puppy.
