Registering your Kennel name is basically up to you. Not required, but nice to have. There is a minimum on the litters you have.
There is a software package I use for keeping records, "The Breeders Standard" absolutely great. It even does coefficients, helping you plan your breeding, so you aren't breeding too close. You can also purchase as an ad on a fancy shmancy pedigree producer.
