Post Am I wrong here?

I have been doggy sitting Ceiba's brother, Ace (my MIL's dog) since last Weds. I was a bit scared to do it b/c he is not trained with anything whereas Ceiba knows basic stuff like 'sit', 'come' 'drop it' etc. I was scared that his bad habits would make Ceiba digress (hasn't been the case so far!)
I also thought it would be great for Ceiba to have a playmate for awhile b/c she was getting very clingy with hubby and me. They play, play, play all day and most of the night. Chasing each other, fighting over toys, etc.
I attempted to separate the 2 for a little while yesterday afternoon by taking her to the back porch and keeping him inside. That did not sit well with those 2. They were searching and crying for each other. I was like 'uh oh - I'm not gonna be able to separate these 2 again'.
Then, last night as the puppies slept, I thought I would take Ceiba out of the gated area and have her sleep on me on the couch. The INSTANT I took Ceiba out, her brother was crying and crying. I could only stand it for a few minutes and put her back. She wasn't crying but she desperate to get back to her brother. I put her back - boom they go back to sleep.

My question is this: Am I wrong for wanting to keep them together?

It just broke my heart to hear them crying and see them searching for one another. I don't know what Ceiba will do when Ace has to go back home or that I would be able to stand it! I love them both equally and really, genuinely think they need to be together. How could I possibly convince my MIL to leave w/him with me?! He's already learning to 'sit' (think he has that one down) and he's learned where we keep the water - he'll just sit and bark once to ask for it. I'm prepared to pay her for the puppy (or replace!) - I just want what's best.
Can anyone tell me what that is?
