You'll get some mixed opinions here, but I think most of us stay away from rawhide. If the dog swallows them, they can't digest all of them. I stopped when I caught my guy gagging on one that was stuck in the roof of his mouth. It wasn't the stick like you're talking about, though.
I know some people give them to their dogs if their dogs are not swallowers, but even then I'd recommend taking it away when it gets soft.
Better yet, stay with kongs or nylabones.
