I agree....they are too young !
Are you prepared to risk your dogs getting hurt when they are still merely puppies themselves ?
I bet not !
There is always risk, but these are only
puppies yet.
YOU HAVE GOT A BIT TOO EXCITED A BIT TOO SOON !
Read on and I will share the few things I have learnt so far.....
If you didn't realise, then please listen to everyone else who replies.....wait until they are 18 months at least, to give them a better chance to be mature enough to cope with the mating process and the pregnancy and birth. Your male will have a much better idea of what he is doing, and your female will be more willing to be mated.
Read as many books as you can, and look into the pros and cons if your dogs are related....your breeder could help you with these questions.
Please read all my other posts as I have been talking a lot about breeding in the last few days - and I am still learning too - so you don't need to worry about me trying to put you off....JUST WAIT ANOTHER YEAR....it will make all the difference to the health and well-being of your beloved dogs and their puppies.
If you are too late, and she is pregnant -
and they don't need to tie - then give them
very good vet care and ask the vet what you can do to help the poor young female to cope with a pregnancy when she is no more than a pup herself.
(Unless you can literally keep them from eachother during her inbetween seasons, then get him neutered now. You can always pay for a stud. You can only breed her once a year from the age of 18 months-2yrs, no more than 5 litters in her lifetime, though I would say no more than two, and she has to be less than 5 years old.) If you want to keep him intact, then get her neutered if they are to be together and you have had your pups.
Be very careful the male doesn't get damaged, as they can very easily end up with internal damage if they are not carefully watched while mating.
I am not trying to scare you, but my male is 4 years old and has mated my 3 year old for their first time five weeks ago, and believe me it is very scary when they have a slip tie, or try to pull away when they are not ready through inexperience.
My male, despite me holding them both, dragged his bits out of the female and there was blood everywhere. He is fine, and not bruised or torn. The bleeding stopped straight away. His manhood was just stretched into a long piece of trapped skin for a second which caused the bleeding.
Both dogs were wanting to do it again, but I have kept them apart.
If I hadn't been there, then serious injury could have been done to the male.
Just a wee thing to watch for if you didn't already know.
Also, they should ideally be mated once, and then again 48 hours later - that should be enough.
We all have to learn somewhere !
I AM STILL LEARNING TOO.
I've got all my info so far from books and breeder friends.
VERY GOOD LUCK TO YOU......read my other posts !
