I also flew to pick up my new baby. She was paid in full two weeks BEFORE I picked her up, I had a reservation on the airlines for her return trip, her carrier, sweater, blanket, toys, leash, and Nutrical that I brought with her. I was in close contact with my breeder and called her from the airport when my flight was changed. She met me at the airport with the pup and her health certificate along with her shot records, which included her bordatella as I requested and paid for.
If a possible new mommy/daddy is conscientious enough to make sure their airline allows pup and hasn't made an advance reservation for the pup's return carry-on, then they probably aren't the right mommy/daddy for your pup. I don't think you handled this inappropriately at all.
