I have both my girls microchipped. It depends on where you live, and where you get it done as for cost. Usually it is around $25.00-$30.00, you then fill out paperwork and register them, that is another $18.00.
I had mine microchipped for my peace of mind. Will it stop somebody from stealing your dog? No, but if somebody did I have a better chance of proving she is mine.
If your dog is lost, it may be easier to be reunited with you, but that is only if a shelter or vet scans them.
I feel strongly about it, my friends dog was stolen from her yard and she got him back a few days later because of the microchip, so I feel it is worth every penny!
