What if you got some unfinished wood shelves (like a bookshelf-type thing) from a place like A.C. Moore. They often have them on sale.. and if the aren't on sale.. if you google "A.C. Moore discount coupon" they have a 40% off one item.
You could paint or stain it whatever you wanted.. or even just leave them unfinished. If you plan to do other fairs, shows, etc, they could be a good investment.
To go a cheaper route, you could get different size boxes and kind of 'stair-step' them, then cover them with some nice fabric or maybe even twin unfitted sheets.
