Although not a "Scientific" poll - as you can see from the Yorkie training poll - housebreaking tends to be the #1 problem. They are not the easiest, arguably one of the most difficult, dogs to housebreak. That's because of a number of reasons:
1) terrier personality - my last Yorkie pup had no qualms of pooping in her crate, no matter how I adjusted the size, because unlike my fastidious Poodles, she comes from a long line of "dirt-dogs."
2) terrier personality - they come from terrier stock, independant, strong willed and scrappy little dogs who hunt vermin! Although people argue back and forth about whether Yorkies (or any other breed for that matter) can be jelous or vindictive, on a personal level, I have no doubt. We had a much loved rugrat, who would gladly pee in FRONT of us, while growling and hissing (she came to us because her original owner could not handle her), if we dared to repermand her for doing something wrong \, or better yet, if we dared to walk out the door and leave her alone. She was, in all other respects, one of the most lovable dogs we ever had.
3) small bladders - run, don't walk when they tell you they need to go! Especially as puppies, yorkies will often need to go out far far far more frequently than larger breed puppies. People getting Yorkies sometimes under -estimate that fact. If you work all day and have to leave your Yorkie for longer than four hours at a clip, this may become a big problem for you. You can't scold a pup for what he is physiologicaly unable to do!
4) Silky, fine coat - if it's cold out there or wet, your Yorkie may disagree with you about whether or not thou shall take thy pooch outside!
