Yeah, you have to bend them a bit. I've been using my carrier for over a week now and I love it! I love the long strap that I can just throw over my head so I can carry it cross-wise and have my hands totally free. I got Tetley used to it by leaving it open on the floor for several days and tossed treats in there every once in a while. He's comfortable in it now but he still doesn't like me to close the mesh top on him.
