There are several companies that sell those things, so they must be having success with them or they wouldn't sell. It sounds like a good idea to me. Remember if you get real grass you will have to keep it cut. Some of the ones I saw had a drainage drawer you could pull out and empty and some had a pee pad underneath to catch the drainage.
