I dont want him to have dreds!
Boy, can I identify with this! Bichons are really bad to get mats. My female, Lacy, will mat over night, I swear. She has a very thick coat and corkshrew curls. Cosmo has a lighter coat and it isn't as curly, so it's easier. I use a greyhound comb. It's metal and has wide teeth on one end and more narrow teeth on the other end. They go to the groomer every four weeks, but need to be combed out a lot between groomings. A lot of Bichon owners use plastic letter openers to cut through bad mats, the kind that are square with a split on one side with a blade. They seem to do the least damage to the hair if you have to cut through a mat. We also use something called Cowboy Magic. It's great for getting through mats and generally makes combing/brushing easier. My granddaughter's Yorkie is only 8 weeks old, but I think they should start combing/brushing her a lot so she will be used to it. She has a soft brush, but it isn't a grooming brush.
