If Macy is 5 months old, she could very well be getting near her first heat cycle. I was told a male can tell weeks in advance when her time is getting near. If she is not swollen or bleeding, for now you might just want to watch them like a hawk, never leaving them alone together even for a minute.....cuz that's all it might take for a tie to occur. When you can't watch them or be with them, then I would separate them. Take turns having one with you while the other is gated or put in a separate room. Gates alone are not trust worthy when you're not home, BTW. When you are with them as an added precaution, you could still have them wear the belly bands and panties. Better safe than sorry.
When she does come into heat, be ready for some noisy sleep deprived nights. They will have to be separated and I know that my two did not like it. It will be crazy for at least 2-3 weeks. Another option that has been suggested is to have your male (or female I suppose) stay with a family member or friend until the heat is over.
Good luck to you............check her daily for signs of her coming into heat so you know for sure.
